From Aaron W. Reed to Vinnie Jones: All the actors who have played Juggernaut so far

Juggernaut, also known as Cain Marko, has been portrayed by four different actors in various Marvel films. Known for his complicated relationship with the X-Men, Juggernaut makes his official Marvel Cinematic Universe debut in Deadpool and Wolverine in 2024.

This was a new beginning for the character, who had previously appeared in Fox’s X-Men films. Juggernaut made his debut in 1965 in X-Men #12, created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. He is famous for his incredible strength and near invulnerability, which he receives from the Crimson Gem of Cyttorak.

As the half-brother of X-Men founder Charles Xavier, Juggernaut’s backstory is both deep and interesting. Below is a list of all the actors who have played Juggernaut so far:

1. Ryan Reynolds

Juggernaut in Deadpool 2 was brought to life thanks to advanced CGI technology. Ryan Reynolds, who starred in, wrote, and produced the film, also contributed to Juggernaut’s portrayal. He used facial motion capture and physical performance to enhance Juggernaut’s intensity and power.

Reynolds also provided his voice for Juggernaut, which was digitally altered to create a deep, imposing growl that suited the character’s large and menacing stature. This approach enabled a dynamic and fluid portrayal of Juggernaut, distinguishing it from previous versions, such as Vinnie Jones’ performance in X-Men: The Last Stand, which relied on practical effects and a physical suit.

The use of computer-generated imagery (CGI) in Deadpool 2 allowed for more exciting and adaptable action scenes, particularly the fierce battle between Juggernaut and Colossus. This contemporary technological approach greatly enhanced Juggernaut’s physicality and presence, which also improved the film’s visual effects.

2. Aaron W. Reed

Aaron W. Reed’s performance as Juggernaut in Deadpool and Wolverine brought a new take on the character. Known for his impressive physical presence, Reed had previously shown his strength as the Dude, a muscular version of Ryan Reynolds’ character in Free Guy.

Reed’s performance in Deadpool and Wolverine was particularly notable during the tense battle with X-23 in the Void. The fight was memorable because there was a huge contrast between X-23’s small stature and her huge body and dynamic action skills.

Inspired by his role in X-Men: The Last Stand, Reed’s interpretation of Juggernaut was both a tribute to Vinnie Jones’ character and a demonstration of his commitment to physically challenging roles. In the film, he is jokingly referred to as “this year’s Juggernaut”, emphasizing his outstanding acting chops.

3. David Leitch

David Leitch, best known for directing Deadpool 2, played a key role in bringing Juggernaut to life. Not only did he provide the facial motion capture for Juggernaut, but he also appeared in scenes with Ryan Reynolds. With a strong background in directing and stunt coordination, including credits in John Wick and Atomic Blonde, Leitch’s involvement gave the role of Juggernaut depth and realism.

His performance ensured that Juggernaut’s expressions and movements were believable and effective. Although he didn’t return for Deadpool and Wolverine, Leitch’s work in Deadpool 2 is exceptional, showcasing his ability in both action and performance.

4. Vinnie Jones

The first actor to play Juggernaut in a motion picture was Vinnie Jones, who starred in X-Men: The Last Stand (2006). Jones, who was known for playing tough guys, brought a different intensity and charm to the role. Prior to this, he was most recognized for his roles in serious films such as Guy Ritchie’s Snatch (2000) and Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels (1998).

Jones’ most famous line in X-Men: The Last Stand is “I’m the Juggernaut, b****!” – the line went viral and was frequently mocked online. Deviating from the comics, the film gave Juggernaut a self-aware sense of humor and changed his origins from magical to mutant powers.

Jones was asked to return for Deadpool and Wolverine, but declined due to the physical demands of the role. Despite this, his performance remains a memorable part of X-Men film history.
