In their statement, the Burroughs family said: ‘We celebrate the extraordinary life and enduring legacy of James ‘Jimmy’ Burroughs. For more than five decades, he was one of the most influential and beloved directors in television history. As a great director, mentor and creative force, he helped shape generations of comedy and brought immense joy to audiences around the world.’

The statement continued: ‘During his unparalleled career, Burroughs directed over 1,000 episodes of television and was instrumental in creating some of the most iconic series ever produced, including The Mary Tyler Moore Show, Taxi, Cheers, Frasier, Friends, Will & Grace and The Big Bang Theory, among many others.’

It added: ‘But beyond his remarkable achievements, Burroughs will be remembered for something even greater: his kindness, generosity and unwavering faith in those around him. He had a rare ability to make everyone better and was known for remembering everyone he met by name, making colleagues at every level feel seen, valued and appreciated.’

Tribute from the Friends cast

Following the announcement, actor David Schwimmer, who played Ross Geller FriendBurroughs and highlighted their bond.

He wrote on Instagram: ‘Jimmy Burroughs brought out the best in every actor he worked with and elevated every show he directed, making it funnier and more inspiring than anyone could have expected. Their warmth, humility and generosity made us feel safe, like family and I’m sure we weren’t the only artistes to feel that way. He took care of us on and off camera.

Describing Burroughs as a father figure, Schwimmer said: ‘Paternal in the best sense of the word: loving, wise, encouraging, challenging, instructive, patient, inspirational, playful – and on his best days, I’d like to think, even proud.’ Thousands of writers, actors, producers, crew members and network executives have always had the privilege of being on a good platform with him, watching him work and learning from his incomparable talent.’

He concluded: ‘Jimmy, I miss you already and I’m forever grateful. Thank you for being such a wonderful director, mentor and friend.

Matt LeBlanc, who plays Joey Tribbiani, also paid tribute to Burroughs. He wrote online: ‘Jimmy, words cannot describe the influence and impact you had on us and all those who were fortunate enough to know you. Sir you are a true icon on many levels. Best wishes for your next assignment. you will be missed. God bless (sic).’

Lisa Kudrow, who plays Phoebe Buffay, also paid her respects by sharing a photo with Burroughs on her Instagram Stories.

About James Burroughs

Born in Los Angeles in 1940, Burroughs came from a family with deep roots in the entertainment industry. His father, Abe Burroughs, was an author and musician who wrote the books Musical Guys and Dolls and How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying.

During his childhood, the family moved to New York, where Burroughs attended the High School of Music and Art. He later graduated from Oberlin College and earned a master’s degree from Yale School of Drama.

After completing his studies, Burroughs returned to California and began a career in theater.
