Fan asks Selena Gomez how she trims her mustache, singer opens up about melasma
Selena Gomez recently responded to comments about her natural appearance in a makeup-free video, sharing her experience with melasma and giving candid advice on skin health and self-care.

Selena Gomez didn’t shy away from an awkward question, she laughed it off and set the record straight. When asked by a social media user how she “shaves her moustache”, the singer-actor commented directly, and used the moment to open up about her skin condition and body positivity.
In a makeup-free Instagram Stories video posted on Tuesday, Dec. 16, Selena Gomez responded to a follower who asked how she “shaves” her upper lip. Pleased but firm, Gomez clarified that what viewers saw was not facial hair but skin condition. “Someone made me laugh because they asked me, ‘How do you trim your mustache,'” she said, before adding, “It’s my melasma. I take care of it and treat it, but yes, it exists.”
Explaining further, Gomez said the condition is linked to sun exposure. “I totally get it. It’s from the sun,” she said, urging her followers to be diligent about wearing sunscreen. Melasma typically causes brown or blue-gray spots on the skin and is often triggered by sunlight or hormonal changes.
The Rare Beauty founder has consistently spoken about embracing her natural skin and talking openly about issues like acne and pigmentation. Reflecting on how stress affects her skin, Gomez shared, “I’ve noticed that when I get stressed or something, I break out more or I get lazy with my routine. So I think it’s just become a part of it. And I just deal with whatever I got that day.”
She also talked about the deep connection between skin care and overall health. “When you’re taking care of your skin, you’re taking care of your body and your mind and your spirit,” Gomez said, adding that sunscreen remains a non-negotiable for her, especially given her lupus diagnosis.
Gomez has previously addressed speculation about cosmetic procedures. Responding to online rumors on TikTok, she said, “Honestly, I hate it. I was taking steroids because the disease was progressing. I have Botox. That’s it. Leave me alone,” pushing back strongly against assumptions about her appearance.
Despite the constant scrutiny, the singer has developed her own coping system. In earlier conversation with PeopleGomez shared, “Some days you just have to let yourself get it out, and then afterward, have a good laugh. I don’t know the key — I just know what works for me.”
As for self-care, she likes to keep things grounded and simple. Gomez reinforced her message of balance, honesty and self-compassion, saying, “I probably just like to see a friend, talk to my therapist, and seek out people who can help with the situation.”
