The disruption occurred due to financial and distribution issues in the final hours before release. While the producers officially cited “unavoidable reasons”, reports pointed to dues and other pending payments which led to the delay in the film’s clearance for theatrical release.
The immediate release of the film now depends on whether the producers are able to pay the alleged dues for the subsequent shows on time.
delay timeline
The problems became public on Wednesday, May 13, when reports emerged about financial constraints affecting the release. Director RJ Balaji said that he was confident that the producers would resolve the issues by night. But as the night progressed, speculations of postponement grew after major theater chains started removing listings of the film from online booking platforms.
At around 1am on Thursday, producer SR Prabhu of Dream Warrior Pictures posted an apology on X, confirming that the 9am shows were canceled due to “unavoidable reasons”.
The film recorded a promising start with advance bookings, especially in B and C centres. According to trade website Sacnilk, Karuppu It was recorded at Rs 7.92 crore in India (with blocked seats). According to reports, the overseas collection was also solid.
Due to financial issues, the show is being unlisted in theaters in India and abroad.
Why was the film delayed?
At the heart of the delay is said to be outstanding dues of Rs 10 crore in Tamil Nadu. In the Tamil film industry, the KDM, or Key Delivery Message, is the secure digital key required to screen a film in theatres, and is often withheld until pending payments are made. It appears that non-payment has become a major hurdle Karuppu Reach theaters on time.
The financial strain was reportedly due to unpaid location fees associated with EVP Studios near Chennai. The production house owes huge sums of money to several people, reportedly around Rs 50 crore. It is said that these dues have created a legal and financial hurdle due to which the final approval required for distribution has not been received.
The setback was more significant as the film had already received special permission for a 9 am show, raising expectations among exhibitors and audiences for an early start on the release day.
what happens next
Producer SR Prabhu is now working to resolve the financial crisis, while RJ Balaji has expressed disappointment but is hopeful that the issue can be resolved later. Theater owner and distributor Tiruppur Subramaniam said the industry is considering a 12 midnight or later release, depending on the update at 10.30 am.
Meanwhile, many fans expressed their disappointment on social media after waiting for more than two years for the film’s release.
