Fresh from her wedding and already back on the sets, Kritika Kamra is embracing both personal and professional milestones with ease. As he gears up for his upcoming series Matka King, in an exclusive interview with Pinkvilla, the versatile actor talks at length about his ambition, why, for him, work has always been second nature, and marriage with Gaurav Kapoor.
resuming work after marriage
When asked about returning to work so soon after marriage, Krutika said, “Gaurav and I are not the ones who would take weeks or months off. It was just not planned. It felt natural to get back to what we love.” Having worked till just a week before her wedding and resuming commitments soon after, Kritika said both she and her husband were clear about prioritizing their professional lives. “We both had work lined up, so we decided to postpone the travel plans and focus on our commitments first,” he said.
On working with Nagraj Manjule
For Kritika, Matka King was not just another project, it was an opportunity to collaborate with Nagraj Manjule, a filmmaker she admires greatly. The actor said, “I have been following Nagraj sir’s work for years. When I got to know that he was making a Hindi web series, I really wanted to be a part of it. He creates space for actors to experiment. He tells you what he wants and then lets you do it. He is a man of few words, but his direction is very precise.”
Set in 1960s Mumbai, the show delves into a richly textured world that immediately attracted her. Kritika revealed, “What made it even more attractive was the chance to play a role that she had never done before. It was challenging and important to the story, which inspired me to do it.”
Finding Rhythm with Vijay Verma
Sharing the screen with Vijay Varma proved to be one of the most comfortable collaborations for Kritika. He said, “We didn’t really know each other before this, but the first read-through created a natural understanding. We’re both curious and observant, so there was a great exchange on set. We could start playing as soon as the cameras were on, and that spontaneity translated into a very organic and playful chemistry.”
Having navigated films, television, web series and music videos effortlessly, Kritika doesn’t consider one format more challenging than the other. He explained, “I don’t care about the size of the screen; it’s the character that challenges me, not the medium. Acting just requires honesty.”
A new chapter, same foundation
As far as her married life with Gaurav Kapoor is concerned, Kritika calls it a natural extension of a relationship built on strong understanding. “We knew each other well even before we got married, which is why we took this step. While there have been no surprises, there have been moments of quiet discovery,” she revealed. The one memory that comes to the fore is of their wedding day. He concluded, “It was very emotional. I saw Gaurav vulnerable in a way I hadn’t seen before. That was special.”
