Emily in Paris showrunner Darren Star talks show’s location change to Rome in season 5; ‘the universe will expand’

Emily will no longer be in Paris in Season 5! The show has just ended its fourth season *spoiler ALERT* The Agence Gretto team has secured a huge client in Rome, Emily’s new charming Italian boyfriend, Eugenio Franceschini. Sylvie announces the opening of a new branch of her company in Rome, headed by the one and only savvy marketing genius, Emily.

Just when it seemed like Gabrielle might be the only one with her life in Rome, the show hinted that Gabrielle might have the same intentions.

The season four finale set the stage for the gang to conquer a new country. In an interview with TVLine, show creator Darren Star explained this big change and the reasons that inspired him to make this decision. According to Star, this will lead to new plot lines and cultural challenges for Emily.

“I think it expands the universe of the show,” she said. The star added that the decision is tied to the character’s growth. As she becomes comfortable with the culture, people and places of Paris, she will be thrown into another country with new cultural dynamics, which will bring uniqueness to the show.

“And also, I think there are cultural differences between French and Italian people — and we do that —” he said, adding that they will retain French culture. “It’s a whole new world, but that doesn’t mean we’re leaving Paris,” the star added.

In the fourth season finale, life looked pretty great for Emily – she moved to a new country, found a new boyfriend, finally got rid of the Alfie-Gabriel drama, got the chance to lead the Roman branch of Agence Grato, etc. However, there’s no way things are going to go smoothly for her!

In addition to experiencing culture shock, he might have to face Gabriel, which would put him in the same position again. When the latter finally got his Michelin star, he longed to celebrate the success with Emily. Later, he became emotional after receiving a voice note from her, apparently in French, indicating that he wanted to win her back, which equals more drama!

All seasons of Emily in Paris are streaming on Netflix.
