xAI work culture in the spotlight

Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence venture, xAI, recently made headlines, but this time, not for rockets or electric cars. A report from the Wall Street Journal revealed that employees were asked to sign away the rights to their faces and voices as part of an internal effort dubbed “Project Skippy”.

The initiative reportedly required employees, primarily “AI tutors” who helped train XAI’s chatbot Grok, to grant the company a perpetual, global license to use its biometric data to develop the next generation of chatbots, including a rumored flirtatious virtual companion named Annie.

During a meeting in April, company lawyer Lily Lim reportedly told employees that XAI needed “authentic human images and audio” to make its digital avatars more lifelike. But not everyone was comfortable with the idea. Some employees questioned whether their likenesses could later be sold or reused, while others asked whether opting out was even possible.
