Superstar Rajinikanth is expected to wrap up the shooting of Jailer 2 soon, after which the actor is expected to start his next project, Thalaivar173. As the project was initially announced with director Sundar C at the helm, the filmmaker has opened up on whether he has opted out of the project because of his larger-scale venture, Sanghamitra.

According to a report in Tamil news media, director Puthiya Thalaimurai denied reports of leaving Thalaivar173 because of the film Sanghamitra.
The filmmaker said, “I didn’t leave Thalaivar173 because of Sanghamitra. Sanghamitra is a 2-year commitment, and at this point of time, given my financial situation, I can’t get stuck in the same project for 2 years, and I have back-to-back commitments. Mookuthi Amman 2 was completed 4 months ago, but at least 1 year of CGI work is left. Nayanthara features prominently as Amman in that costume. Gives.”
For those unaware, director Sundar C was earlier announced as the director of a film titled Thalaivar173. While the project was launched with a puja ceremony, the director later walked out of the film.
Later, Don fame Siby Chakraborty came on board to lead the project and the production is expected to commence from April 2026. The upcoming film will be co-produced by Kamal Haasan under the banner of Raj Kamal Films International (RKFI).
Rajinikanth’s work front
Rajinikanth will next be seen in the lead role in the sequel Jailer 2, directed by Nelson Dilipkumar. It is being told that the film stars SJ Surya, Vidya Balan and Mithun Chakraborty in lead roles.
With Mohanlal and Shiv Rajkumar reprising their roles from the first installment, Shah Rukh Khan is also expected to have a cameo role in the film, which is reportedly to be shot in March this year.
Looking ahead, Rajinikanth has also announced that he will be sharing the screen with Kamal Haasan once again soon. Tentatively titled KHXRK Reunion, it will be directed by Nelson Dilipkumar with Anirudh Ravichander handling the music and background score.
