and so it begins. The first overseas box office numbers for Dhurandhar: The Revenge have started coming in and on expected lines, they are breaking records worldwide. In the West, the film starring Ranveer Singh has set a new benchmark for the highest preview ever for a Bollywood film in the United States and Canada. While on the eastern side, the film recorded the biggest opening day for Bollywood in Australia.
In the United States, the film grossed approximately US$1.60 million on Wednesday. This ranks as the highest preview for a Bollywood film, surpassing Animal’s US$980K. Not many Bollywood films have previews in the United States; It’s like South Indian films. The highest preview for an Indian film is that of Kalki 2898 AD, which is quite high at US$3.50 million. However, Dhurandhar: The Revenge may be far ahead in terms of ticket sales. This is despite the film failing to be released at many AMC locations, which required physical delivery of material, and did not occur on time. If this had not happened, the film could have grossed US$250K or more.
EOD for the weekend has seen an unprecedented increase of almost US$5.40 million in the vault on Wednesday. The film is on track to gross over US$10 million in its four-day extended weekend, which would be a record not only for Bollywood but potentially for Indian cinema.
Similarly, there were record previews in Canada with CAD 450K, and here it was also a record for Indian cinema. Unlike the US, sales are much more spread out, with Thursday’s opening day expected to be even bigger. Progress is through the roof. That’s because weekday sales at the country’s top chain cineplexes are equivalent to the final pre-sales of some of the biggest movies.
In Australia, the film grossed approximately AUD 725K, placing it ahead of Pathan’s AUD 567K and Animal’s AUD 547K. These figures came during holidays or weekends. Here the film has outsold him by about 30 per cent in a week. Despite the record being at risk of being broken, the progress here has been insane. It is already facing capacity issues at most major venues for the weekend and needs to allocate more shows.
The top opening days for Bollywood in Australia are as follows:
| Post | Topic | Year | Total |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Dhurandhar: Revenge | 2026 | $725,000 |
| 2 | Pathan | 2023 | $567,000 |
| 3 | Animal | 2023 | $547,000 |
| 4 | donkey | 2023 | AUD 422,000 |
| 5 | young | 2023 | AUD 399,000 |
The second major market, the United Kingdom, is also on a record basis, set for GBP 300K plus opening day. Here the actual figures will come tomorrow morning, and it may break the opening day record of ‘Pathan’. The UK was the only major market where Dhurandhar did not make record earnings, but the sequel certainly looks to be taking off as one. It would be interesting if it could take the overall record as well. There are several other smaller markets that are reporting record numbers. Based on progress in North America, including previews, the overseas opening day is set to exceed US$5 million.
Stay tuned for the actual events tomorrow.
