Dhaka: Days after Mohammad Shahabuddin resigned as Bangladesh President, complaints were filed against him at the Bangladesh International Criminal Tribunal (ICT) on Sunday, seeking investigation into his role in “crimes against humanity” committed during the ‘2024 uprising’ against the Sheikh Hasina government.The charges stem from the same incidents for which former prime minister Hasina was sentenced to death in absentia.Shahabuddin – a longtime aide of Hasina who was forced to flee Bangladesh due to the insurgency – resigned on Friday citing health complications.Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed said, “The opposition, including the National Citizen Party, have made allegations against Shahabuddin. They have every right to do so. But we have not found anything in those allegations that warrants our consideration.”

However, Law Minister Mohammad Asaduzzaman said corruption allegations against Shahabuddin would be investigated.ICT chief prosecutor Mohammad Aminul Islam said his office had received two complaints – one from the Bangladesh Azad Party and the other from the Rastrosonglap Forum.“I have not looked into the complaints yet,” he said. “As the then president, Shahabuddin had a role in killings, torture and other crimes against students and protesters,” alleged Al Noor Mohammed Ayash, central member secretary of the Rastrosonglap Forum.
