Release in January amid seven-month standoff with CBFC

Jan Naygan It was originally scheduled to release on 9 January, ahead of the Pongal holidays and three months before Vijay’s first election contest. The film was submitted to the CBFC on December 19, 2025, but instead of getting the certificate within the normal timeline, it got stuck in an unusually lengthy certification process.

The inquiry committee had initially demanded amendments. After incorporating the changes suggested by the producers and resubmitting the film. At the time, the producers revealed that they were informed by the CBFC that the film was suitable for a U/A certificate.

However, an investigation committee member who saw the film filed an internal complaint suggesting that some scenes in the film might hurt public sentiments. Following the complaint, the process came to a halt and the producers were advised to send the film to a review committee. Also, such a claim has been made in unconfirmed reports. Jan Naygan’s The release could prove influential for Vijay ahead of the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections to be held on April 23.

On January 6, production house KVN Productions filed a petition in the Madras High Court seeking their help in expediting the process.

After several weeks turned into a month with no decision, production house KVN Productions approached the Madras High Court, arguing that the delay had put the film’s scheduled release in jeopardy. However, legal proceedings failed to resolve the impasse immediately, leaving the film in limbo. After a month and a visit to the Supreme Court, KVN Productions withdrew the petition and sent the film to the review committee.

When the crisis deepened due to piracy leak

Tamil Nadu Police arrested several people, including an independent film editor, in connection with the leak. During the subsequent hearing, the prosecution informed the Madras High Court that the pirated version was viewed by approximately 1.2 crore people before authorities blocked access to it.

Investigators alleged that the leaked edit was assembled from footage copied from an editing suite before eventually reaching piracy websites.

Rumors, fake certificates and ongoing speculations

As the months passed, social media was abuzz with speculation regarding the fate of the film.

Just a few days ago a fake CBFC certificate was claimed Jan Naygan It went viral before it even received the A certificate, with X account sharing it admitting it was fake. Later it was revealed that the fake document was prepared on the lines of Vijay leo The censor certificate is adding to the confusion among fans.

Speculations regarding the release date also ran high after foreign distributors indicated a theatrical release on July 24, while reports suggested that the film could also be released on July 23 depending on the final strategy of the producers. Canadian distributor York Cinemas had already announced a July 24 release for overseas audiences, even before any official confirmation from KVN Productions.

Now with the censor hurdle cleared, all eyes are on KVN Productions to announce the official release date.
