Chiyaan Vikram reveals how his ‘mistake’ cost him the role of Arvind Swamy in Mani Ratnam’s cult film Bombay: ‘I would wake up and cry’

Chiyaan Vikram is currently riding high on success as his latest film Thangalan has received rave reviews. Well, the actor has impressed everyone with his versatility. And recently, the star revealed a fact about his professional life that not many people know. He revealed that his ‘mistake’ cost him the role of Arvind Swamy in Mani Ratnam’s cult classic Bombay.

In an interview with Siddharth Kannan, Chiyaan Vikram clarified that contrary to reports of him rejecting a project like Bombay, he had actually messed up in the final stages of the audition. The Thangalan star recalled that he froze in front of the camera when Mani Ratnam asked him to do a particular kind of scene.

He said, “I didn’t refuse Bombay, I messed up the audition because he suddenly asked me to audition and he didn’t have a video camera, he took a still camera and he said, ‘act’. He told me, ‘Look at that girl, she is running and I will freeze.’ He said, ‘Don’t stop, continue’ but I was confused, ‘He has a camera, this is not a video camera, so why should I act?’ I understood at that time that if I move, his image will get blurred.”

Chiyaan Vikram told how he handled himself after losing such a big opportunity to work with Mani Ratnam. He told that he used to cry continuously for two months.

Chiyaan Vikram told, “For two months, every day, I would wake up and cry, ‘Man, I have gone mad.’ A grown man cried for two months. That film became famous all over India and became a cult film.”

He also revealed how he had decided that he would retire from acting after working in this amazing movie, but unfortunately his audition went wrong, which derailed his plans.

At the end of the interview, Chiyaan Vikram expressed his gratitude for getting the chance to work with Mani Ratnam again, that too for the hugely successful movie Ponniyin Selvan I & II.
