China proposes four-point plan for Middle East peace after US-Iran talks fail

China on Tuesday outlined a four-point proposal for lasting peace in the Middle East, with Foreign Ministry spokesman Mao Ning sharing details of comments made by President Xi Jinping.Xi made the proposal during a meeting in Beijing with Sheikh Khalid bin Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi of the United Arab Emirates. This development comes after initial rounds of talks between the United States and Iran ended without any agreement. According to Chinese state media, Xi said China would continue to play a “constructive role” in advancing peace talks in the region.“Xi Jinping stressed China’s principled stance of promoting peace and dialogue, and reiterated that it will continue to play a constructive role in this regard,” state news agency Xinhua News Agency reported. In a post on X, Mao said the proposal focuses on principles such as peaceful coexistence, sovereignty, international law and balanced development. “President Xi Jinping made four proposals on securing and promoting peace and stability in the Middle East,” he wrote. The first point emphasizes the importance of peaceful coexistence among the Gulf countries. “Remain committed to the principle of peaceful co-existence. The Gulf states in the Middle East are close neighbors who cannot walk away. It is important to support the Gulf states in improving their relations, work to build a common, comprehensive, cooperative and sustainable security architecture of the Middle East and the Gulf region, and strengthen the foundation of peaceful co-existence,” the indicator said. The second point talks about respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity. “Remain committed to the principle of national sovereignty. Sovereignty serves as the foundation for all countries, especially developing countries, to survive and thrive, and must not be violated. The sovereignty, security and territorial integrity of the Gulf countries must be scrupulously respected, and the security of their personnel, facilities and institutions must be strictly protected.“The third resolution highlights adherence to international law and the United Nations system. The indicator reads, “Be committed to the principle of the rule of international law. It is important to firmly maintain the international system at its core, an international order based on international law and the basic norms governing international relations underpinned by the purposes and principles of the United Nations Charter.”The last point underlines the need to balance development and security. “Be committed to a balanced approach to development and security. Security is a prerequisite for development, and development serves as a safeguard of security. All parties should work to create a good environment for the development of the Gulf countries and bring positive energy. China is willing to share opportunities with the Gulf countries through Chinese modernization and work with them to create fertile ground for regional development and security.”
