He admitted that delivering the lines as a non-actor might seem difficult, so he chose a more spontaneous approach. The outlet also highlighted Puth’s humility, noting that he considered it an “honor” to be comically “roasted” by guest star Will Ferrell on the show’s first episode.

The singer then revealed how he wrote the lines on the spot, thinking it would be funny for the character to say “Shawn Mendes is a better version of him”. He explained that he has “no problem” with making fun of himself, saying that it is not that serious, but a way to keep things light-hearted.
