The alleged theft came to light in October 2025 when family members inspected a safe in the house and found that it was broken into. Several valuables were found missing, including gold and diamond jewelery as well as two luxury wrist watches.
According to the FIR, Rajeev Tandon met Chhabria after suspicion arose regarding missing valuables. Police said he initially denied any involvement but later allegedly confessed to the theft. While he returned two luxury watches which were reported missing, he reportedly told the family that the jewelery was handed over to an associate named Jagadish and assured them that it would be returned.
However, despite several requests and follow-up, the jewelery was never recovered, police said.
In his complaint, Rajiv Tandon said that Chhabria knew the family through mutual contacts since 2020. After the death of her husband and parents, she reportedly grew closer to the family and was eventually granted unrestricted access to the residence.
The complaint further states that valuables were kept on the second floor of the house, an area where only family members and Chhabria could access.
Rajiv also alleged that Chhabria, through one of his associates, who claimed to be a police informer, tried to intimidate him and threatened to implicate him in a false drug case if he continued to demand the return of the missing jewellery.
Police arrested Chhabria on 21 May. He was later produced before a court, which sent him to police custody till May 29. Further investigation is ongoing in the matter.
