A Canadian woman was killed and 13 others were wounded in a shooting at the Teotihuacan pyramids, an archaeological site north of Mexico City, after a gunman opened fire on tourists on Monday, authorities said.In the stampede that followed, six people were shot and seven others were injured. Those injured in the shooting included a Canadian woman, a Colombian woman and a child, a Brazilian and two Americans. Those injured in the melee included a Russian, a Colombian, a Brazilian and four Americans, AFP reports.Mexico State Security Secretary Cristobal Castañeda said the gunman, whose nationality was not known, died by suicide after the attack.The shooting took place around noon at the Pyramid of the Moon, a 45-meter-high structure visitors are allowed to climb. Videos on social media showed the attackers firing intermittently from the top of the pyramid while tourists hid or ran away. A voice can be heard in a video, “A person is firing at us, take care friends, send security.”Officers recovered a firearm, a knife and unused ammunition from the scene and evacuated the visitors. Police and National Guard personnel were deployed after the incident.Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said, “We are deeply saddened by what happened in Teotihuacan today,” and called for a thorough investigation. Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand described it as “a horrific act of gun violence”.The site, which is more than 2,000 years old, attracts more than 1.8 million visitors annually and is one of Mexico’s most popular tourist destinations.
