‘Can I survive on Rs 6 crore without a job in India?’ Indian man in line for green card fired from job

Indian man on Green Card EAD asks if he can go back to India with Rs 6 crore funds and no job.

There is no unanimous opinion on the amount of money in your bank account that can allow you to take a career break. An Indian man in the US recently asked on Reddit if he could live on Rs 6 crore in India without a job. The person stated his status as being on Green Card EAD, which means he has applied for his Green Card and has employment authorization. The Redditor said, “Recently hit with tech layoffs. I’m on GC EAD with about 5 months of financial runway. Given the current job market, I’m trying to plan for the worst-case scenario: moving back to India.”He cited two major problems in shifting to India: one is his house which he does not want to sell at a loss, second is that his children do not know any Indian language and hence if they shift to India, they will have to face a big problem.“Has anyone transferred kids to middle school in India without language skills? And is it worth it to try for 5 months to find a US role at EAD, or should I start preparing for the move now? Can I stay in India with 60 million people without a job?” the Redditor asked.Unlike H-1Bs, who have 60 days in the US after losing their job, Green Card EADs have no window. They can remain in the US as long as their I-485 is pending, is not denied, and they continue to meet the requirements for their green card category.Opinions were divided in the replies as many felt that coming back to India with Rs 6 crore in funds and no immediate job would not be a problem, but another section felt that the Redditor still had enough time to find another job in the US. And leaving the green card queue would also not be appropriate. However, social media users agree on one thing that Rs 6 crore would be enough in India.“6 crores with no debt? You’ll be fine. That’s more money than most families in India have to retire with. Honestly, the big issue here doesn’t seem like money. It sounds like uprooting two kids right before middle school and figuring out a housing situation. I’d probably use those 5 months and keep searching. You’re on an EAD, which takes away one of the headaches employers usually have. It’s better to rush in if you don’t have to. There is no reason. Plus, kids adapt much faster than we give them credit for. A lot of CBSE schools have children who barely know Hindi, especially in big cities. “I wouldn’t stress too much about that part,” one replied.
