US President Donald Trump urged Israel to agree a ceasefire with Hezbollah and told the country to “calm down sometimes and use your brains” as a ceasefire took effect on Friday after deadly attacks in Lebanon killed 47 people.Trump told NBC News that he had spoken to Israel and asked it to agree to a ceasefire, though he declined to say whether he had spoken directly to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.“It’s positive,” Trump said of the ceasefire. “This is a little icing on the cake,” he said, referring to the memorandum of understanding signed by the US and Iran aimed at ending the conflict in West Asia.“You just have to calm down sometimes and use your brains,” Trump said of his relationship with Netanyahu. “My behavior with Bibi has always been good.”Hours after the ceasefire took effect, Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff began a trip to Switzerland for the first round of talks with Iran on a potential nuclear deal, Axios reports.The development comes a day after Vice President JD Vance canceled plans to attend the talks, which were canceled amid renewed fighting in Lebanon. That escalation created new uncertainty over the fate of crucial talks to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.The Swiss Foreign Ministry confirmed that the talks have been postponed and that Switzerland is ready to facilitate them.A senior US official said that after the firing the ceasefire came into effect at around 4 pm Lebanon time. US and Qatari negotiators worked on the deal with Iran’s help.An Israeli official said, “If Hezbollah does not attack us, it is not time for war for us.” He said Israel would keep its forces in southern Lebanon.Lebanon’s health ministry said 47 people were killed and 97 injured in Israeli attacks just after midnight on Friday. The Israeli military said four soldiers have been killed in an incident in Lebanon.Two Lebanese security sources said Israel launched a dozen airstrikes in the first hour of the ceasefire but no airstrikes were recorded after 5 p.m.Trump again defended the agreement after criticism in Washington, including from some Republican allies in Congress.“War has weakened Iran!” He wrote on social media. “We didn’t meet out of desperation, Iran did. They’re finished! We’ll play 60 days. No money to them, not ten cents!”Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi warned that the US would be responsible for any violations of its commitments under the agreement, including ending fighting in Lebanon.The US State Department said Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun and discussed holding the next round of Israel-Lebanon talks in Washington from June 23-25.Oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz picked up after this week’s signing of the deal. The strait carried about a fifth of global crude before it was blocked by Iran during the war.
