September 13 will be special for Kareena Kapoor Khan as her much-awaited film The Buckingham Murders will hit the screens. Kareena plays the role of Jasmeet Bhamra, a detective in the upcoming crime thriller. Directed by Hansal Mehta, the film is being compared to the 2021 drama series, Mare of Easttown featuring Hollywood star Kate Winslet. The filmmaker recently responded to whether The Buckingham Murders is inspired by Mare of Easttown.
On September 6, 2024, director Hansal Mehta shared his opinion on The Buckingham Murders being compared to Mare of Easttown. Mehta said that the audience should not jump to any conclusions before watching his film.
“Take a decision only after seeing. Don’t jump to conclusions,” he tweeted.
Director Hansal Mehta’s response was to an X user who tagged him in a tweet a day earlier. In the tweet, the user expressed disappointment over his direction, claiming that The Buckingham Murders is not an “original” concept
“Mare of Easttown… please God!! Please bring some originals #thebuckinghammurders (sic),” the tweet read.
Following the director’s response, X user responded in the thread, claiming that he had “liked” her work in the past. However, the user “fears that this is Kareena’s attempt to imitate Kate Winslet”.

Earlier, during the trailer launch of The Buckingham Murders, Kareena Kapoor expressed her admiration for Kate Winslet and called herself a “huge fan” of the Titanic star. Kareena admitted that she follows Winslet’s work closely, but Bebo’s character, Jasmeet in the Hansal Mehta directorial is her “interpretation”.
The 43-year-old actress believes there is “no harm” in taking inspiration from other actors. Bebo shared that actors need some inspiration and it is okay if the inspiration comes from a fellow actor.
Kareena Kapoor Khan is producing The Buckingham Murders along with Shobha Kapoor and Ekta Kapoor. Apart from Kareena, the film also stars Ranveer Brar, Ash Tandon and Keith Allen. In the film, Kareena’s character Jasmeet goes through a thrilling journey in which she experiences a range of emotions while uncovering the truth of a murder mystery. Bebo plays a grieving detective who is haunted by the murder of her child. Her character relocates to a new city to investigate the case of a missing child.
Meanwhile, there is an American TV series directed by Kate Winslet called Mare of Easttown. In this 2021 series, Winslet plays Marianne Sheehan aka Mare, a police detective who is tasked with solving the murder of a teenage mother.
