The box office performance of Border 2 had dropped a few weeks ago. Following its digital release and the theatrical release of Dhurandhar: The Revenge, the film’s theatrical run has essentially stopped. The Sunny Deol-led war drama starring Varun Dhawan, Diljit Dosanjh and Ahan Shetty has collected Rs. Have earned Rs. Around 422 crores at the worldwide box office. Out of this Rs. Rs 366 crore (Rs 306 crore) has come from India. ₹56 crore (USD 6.15 million) from overseas.
The film had a good start, while expectations were even higher. However, it made strong gains over the weekend and then saw excellent trading on Monday, which was the Republic Day holiday. At the time, it looked like the film might turn out to be a blockbuster, but it didn’t happen as the collections declined over the next days and then the film didn’t really survive, with a week-on-week decline of around 70 percent.
Nonetheless, Border 2 is a hit film. While the business ranged from hit to super hit, with northern circuits like Rajasthan and East Punjab being blockbusters, the costs involved were high. The film grossed approximately Rs. 30 crore profit, subject to some negotiation changes for non-theatrical revenues.
It’s important to give context to where the high expectations for the film were coming from. Sunny Deol as a box-office entity had largely languished in the last two decades. The blockbuster success of Gadar 2 was a pleasant but shocking surprise for everyone, including Sunny Deol himself. Had Gadar 2 not existed, these numbers of Border 2 would have been viewed with similar pleasant surprise. But now that we have the example of Gadar 2, they are feeling a little disappointed. Ironically, Gadar 2 was underrated before its release, but its success perhaps inspired Border 2 to take another direction. It may not have lived up to the expectations, but it’s another win for Sunny Deol after Gadar 2 and Jatt.
