Bombay High Court gives permission to Preity Zinta to sue Google, Meta over AI deepfakes
The Bombay High Court has allowed Preity Zinta to proceed with a civil suit against Google, Meta, X Corp and other digital entities over alleged deepfakes and altered content. The case focuses on claims of infringement of personality rights, copyright and moral rights.

The Bombay High Court has allowed actor and entrepreneur Preity Zinta to file a civil suit against Google LLC, Meta Platform Inc, X Corp and several other digital entities over alleged AI-generated deepfakes and manipulated online content, which she claims infringes her rights.
On June 16, an order was passed by Justice Abhay Ahuja allowing Zinta to formally file her civil suit before the Bombay High Court.
Zinta’s proposed lawsuit relates to AI-generated deepfake videos, manipulated images, memes, AI chatbot personas and other digital content, which she alleges violates her personality rights, copyright and moral rights, as well as harms her reputation and goodwill.
Advocate Rohan Kadam, appearing for Zinta, argued that the respondents have made the allegedly infringing material widely available online.
He submitted that the platforms “created, uploaded, disseminated and made available to the general public” content, through AI-generated deepfake videos, manipulated images, memes, AI chatbot personas and other digital content, which violated Zinta’s legal rights.
Kadam further told the court that Zinta is an Indian citizen who primarily lives and works in Mumbai. He argued that his goodwill, reputation and business personality lie within the jurisdiction of the Bombay High Court, which is the appropriate forum to hear the case.
The court said that the allegedly infringing material is available not only in Mumbai but across the world. Zinta’s lawyer argued that although part of the case falls under the jurisdiction of the Bombay High Court, many of the companies are based outside Mumbai and the material was shared online.
With the court’s permission, Zinta can now formally file a civil suit. His legal team is seeking financial damages as well as a permanent injunction to stop the platforms from hosting the allegedly infringing content.
Meanwhile, on the work front, Preity Zinta is all set to make a comeback on the big screen batwara 1947Co-starring Sunny Deol and his son Karan Deol, Shabana Azmi and Ali Fazal.
This film is going to be released in theaters on 14th August.
