Remember when Majnu Bhai sold his iconic horse painting to Miss Ishika in the auction? We are talking about Akshay Kumar and Katrina Kaif starrer Welcome. The painting has a cameo in Kartik Aryan’s upcoming film, Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3. Director Anees Bazmee shares that Welcome’s iconic horse painting shown in the Kartik Aryan-led horror-comedy trailer has a MF Hussain connection.
During an exclusive interview with Pinkvilla, Anees Bazmee shared the story behind Majnu Bhai’s painting and revealed that the artwork for which Anil Kapoor’s character was credited was the director’s creation.
Anees discussed the character of Majnu Bhai in detail, saying that in Welcome he is portrayed as a “great painter” who is famous for his live paintings.
“There was a need for a painting in a scene which was going to be auctioned so paintings had come. The production people had brought 8-10 paintings but I liked them a bit. (We needed a painting in an auction scene of Welcome) The production team came with 8-10 paintings but I thought they were quite good),’ the filmmaker recalled.
The director of Welcome said, “I said Majnu Bhai cannot make such a good painting. I had time so I thought let’s try.” Added.
Anees Bazmee recalled that he had never tried painting during his school days. “For the first time, I made this horse. And the secret behind making this horse is that I stayed with our great painter MF Hussain for some time. I had a small contribution in Gaj Gamini and the main thing was with him for a month.” I painted a horse for the first time. I worked with the late great painter MF Hussain for a while during the making of his 2000 film, Gaja Gamini,” the Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 director added.

Anees said that he saw Hussain working on his painting and then tried his talent in painting. The director of Welcome felt that the audience would not laugh at the horse, so the filmmaker created another horse on top of it. The director revealed that he messed with another horse, and its shape ended up looking like a donkey.
Apart from Kartik Aryan, Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 stars Madhuri Dixit, Vidya Balan and Trupti Dimri. It is the third installment of the Bhool Bhulaiyaa franchise.
