Veteran filmmaker Bharathiraja, who died on Wednesday, will be cremated with full state honors at his farmhouse in Theni district on Thursday, June 11. The director’s funeral will be held in his native area, fulfilling his family’s wish to return him to the land where his life began.
talking to PTI On behalf of the bereaved family, renowned lyricist Vairamuthu said Bharathiraja’s mortal remains will be kept at his home in Neelankarai, Chennai, till 9 pm on Wednesday, allowing the public and members of the film fraternity to have a last glimpse of him.

The mortal remains of the filmmaker will then be taken to his hometown area in Tamil Nadu overnight.
“The family has decided to bury him on the same land where he took his first breath,” Vairamuthu said.
according to PTIThe mortal remains will reach Bharathiraja’s farmhouse at Katrodu near Vathlagundu in Theni district on Thursday morning. Members of the public will be able to pay tribute before the funeral, which is scheduled to take place at 3pm.
Vairamuthu also expressed his gratitude to the Tamil Nadu government for announcing a state guard of honor for the filmmaker in recognition of his contribution to Indian cinema.
Bharathiraja was reportedly suffering from respiratory complications and several age-related health issues. Widely considered one of the most influential filmmakers of Indian cinema, he spent more than five decades telling stories based on rural life and human relationships.
In a career spanning over 50 years, Bharathiraja directed over 40 films and left behind a body of work that shaped Tamil cinema. His notable films include 16 Vayathinile, Kizhakka Pogum Rail, Sigappu Rojakkal, Alaigal Oivathillai, Seethakka Chiluka, Mana Vasanai, Mudhal Mariathai, Vedham Pudhithu, Kizhakka Cheemayile.
