Desi foodies love nothing more than Indian cuisine. Be it the US, Canada or Australia, we always look for authentic Indian food to satiate our hunger pangs. But what happens when someone criticises the ingredients used in Indian dishes? Recently, an Australian woman made a racist comment about Indian food. Her post, in which she criticised the use of “dirty spices” in Indian food, went viral and sparked a heated debate on social media.

It all started with a post shared by a user named Jeff on X (formerly Twitter), who described Indian food as the “best on earth”. Sharing a picture of dishes like Indian curries, rice, kebabs and chutneys, he wrote, “Indian food is the best on earth. Fight me.” While many agreed with his opinion, a person named Dr Sydney Watson said, “It’s really, really not.” Furthering her view, the woman said, “If your food needs you to put crappy spices on it to make it tasty, then your food isn’t good.”

One user gave him a lesson in colonial history, writing, “Wars were fought for Indian spices. America was founded because of them. At one time these spices were worth more than their weight in gold.”

Another said, “This is a very crude viewpoint. Indian food is, on the whole, healthier than North American food. The ability to appreciate the merits of other cultures reflects the ability to understand subtlety, not to think like dimwitted people like those you accuse of doing the same. Enjoy McDonald’s.”
