AR Rahman on Ramayana music: Hans Zimmer is Jewish, I am Muslim, the story is Hindu
AR Rahman spoke about his admiration for ‘Ramayana’ and ‘Mahabharata’ as they were a part of his education while growing up. He praised the values and ideas of Indian epics which focus on “high ideals”.

Composer-singer AR Rahman talks about his collaboration with German composer Hans Zimmer Ramayana and his respect for the values and ideas in Hindu mysticism. He described how Indian epics were part of his education while growing up and how “the heart of the epic lies in this moral core.”
In an interview with Rahman BBC Asian Networksaid for his YouTube channel, “I studied in a Brahmin school, and every year we used to do Ramayana And MahabharataSo I know the story,” he said. For Rahman, the heart of the epic lies in its moral core. He added, “The story is about how virtuous a person is, the high ideals and all that. People can argue, but I value all the good things, any good things that you can learn from.”
He further said, “The Prophet said that knowledge is priceless, whether you get it from a king, a beggar, a good deed or a bad deed. You cannot run away from things.”
“I think we need to rise above small-mindedness and selfishness. When we rise, we become brighter, and that’s very important.” Highlighting the diversity behind the project, Rahman said, “Hans Zimmer is Jewish, I’m Muslim, and Ramayana Is a Hindu. It’s coming from India to the whole world with love.” Ramayana Musician added.
Ramayana It is based on the ancient text of the same name by sage Valmiki. The film stars actors Ranbir Kapoor, Sai Pallavi, Yash and Sunny Deol in the roles of Goddess Sita, demon king Ravana and Lord Hanuman respectively. Vivek Oberoi, Rakul Preet Singh, Lara Dutta, Kajal Aggarwal, Ravi Dubey, Kunal Kapoor, Arun Govil, Sheeba Chaddha and Indira Krishnan also star in lead roles.
Ramayana It is set to release in two parts on Diwali 2026 and Diwali 2027.
