Apple is finally rolling out the first beta of iOS 18.1 and macOS Sequoia 15.1. This update also includes the much-awaited preview of Apple Intelligence. With Apple Intelligence, Apple devices will get a set of AI features like summarizing emails, rewriting text, and more. While these features use AI to resolve users’ queries, Apple is also focusing on protecting user privacy and will provide detailed reports on how Apple Intelligence processes user data.

Apple introduced Apple Intelligence at its developer conference WWDC 2024 earlier this year. According to Apple, Apple Intelligence leverages both on-device and online language models to bring a suite of AI-based features designed to improve the user experience across all devices, including iPhones, Macs, and iPads. Given the concerns about privacy with AI, Apple assures users that it will protect their privacy when using Apple Intelligence. To do this, Apple has implemented the Private Compute Module (PCM) which uses the company’s custom silicon and a hardened operating system. This architecture ensures that data processed online is end-to-end encrypted, making it inaccessible to anyone, including Apple.

But that’s not all. To further strengthen privacy, Apple will also provide detailed privacy reports showing how data has been used by AI. These reports will include a comprehensive overview of how Apple Intelligence handled user requests, specifying whether the processing took place on the device or via PCM. “Private Cloud Compute uses your data only to fulfill your request and never stores it, ensuring it is not accessible to anyone, including Apple. We designed the system in such a way that independent experts can verify these protections,” reads the official blog post.

How to access the Apple Privacy Report

According to 9to5Mac, if you’re part of the beta program, or once Apple Intelligence becomes officially available — likely later this year — users will be able to access the “Apple Intelligence Report” within Privacy & Security settings on compatible devices running beta versions of iOS 18.1 or macOS Sequoia 15.1.

However, Apple will keep this report secure. To view it, users will need to authenticate with Face ID or Touch ID to prevent unauthorized access.

Privacy reports are generated by default and stored on the device for a limited period of 15 minutes. Users can extend the availability of the report to seven days or opt out of generating reports altogether by adjusting this setting.

Notably, the Apple Intelligence features, as well as Privacy Reports, are not included in the initial public release of iOS 18.0 and macOS Sequoia 15.0. Instead, they are expected to be available in the recently released 18.1 and 15.1 updates. Additionally, these features require specific hardware capabilities and are only compatible with iPhone 15 Pro models or Macs and iPads equipped with the M1 chip or newer.
