Apple’s App Store, according to a new report, provided the facility of Rs 44,447 crore (about $ 5.31 billion) in developer billings and sales in 2024. About 94 percent of this commerce is said to have gone directly into developers and businesses, without any commission to Apple.

Conclusion – Published today – IIM is part of a complete research paper by Ahmedabad Professor Vishwanath Pingali, and highlights how the app store is helping developers in India, not only grows, but reaches a global audience, promotes entrepreneurship and success. Apple CEO Tim Cook praised the country’s incredibly lively app economy, while underlining the impact of the app store, not only large-ticks, but also when strengthening the businesses of small developers, compared to a miracle.

“App Store has been an economic miracle for developers in India and around the world, and we are thrilled to support their work,” Cook said. “This study underlines the power of India’s incredibly lively app economy. And we are committed to investing in the success of developers of all sizes.”

In 2024, Indian developers earned Rs 38,906 crore (about 4.65 billion), Rs 3,014 crore (about 352.9 million) from in-app advertisement from selling physical goods and services and earned Rs 2,527 crore (about 302 million rupees (about 302 million) from digital goods and services.

Interestingly, the global appeal of India’s app developers is stronger than ever. In 2024, about 80 percent of his earnings came from users outside India. Apps manufactured by Indian developers were downloaded more than 755 million times worldwide, which is double downloaded compared to five years ago. Many of these apps also made it in the top 100 charts in 70 storefronts outside India.

Meanwhile, the downloads of Indian users have tripled in the last five years, and earnings from Indian consumers have exceeded five times. Indian developers have also made some of the most popular catering apps for Quick Commerce and Gig Economy Sector, even sectors such as food delivery, travel, gaming and entertainment are fueling the use of the app.

Small developers, especially, are watching a big win, recording a jump of 74 percent in earnings between 2021 and 2024. Development is attributed to initiatives like Apple’s App Store Small Business Program, which offers low commission rates.

The report also provides the feeling of focusing the app store on user and developer security. From 2020 to 2023, Apple prevented a possible fraud transaction of more than $ 7 billion, including $ 1.8 billion in 2023 alone. More than 1.7 million app submission was rejected during this period to fail to meet privacy, safety and quality standards.

Conclusions come at a time when Apple is struggling with significant investigation – and even regulatory action – on some of its existing app store policies, especially within the European Union (EU). Recently, the European Union imposed a fine of 500 million on the cupertino-based tech company, from directing the developers from the app store, from directing alternative payment options to allegedly banning the developers. It limits competition and consumer choice, violating the Digital Markets Act (DMA), the European Union has opposed.
