Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Monday responded to Rahul Gandhi’s remarks on the decades-old ‘Halwa ritual’ and said she was “saddened” by the statement made by the Leader of Opposition in Parliament. Replying to the Budget debate in the Lok Sabha, Sitharaman said, “It saddens me. I wish he knew why the Halwa ritual is observed. There is a tradition in this country to serve something sweet before starting any good work. Since when did it become a photo event? In 2013-14, why did he (Rahul Gandhi) not ask the then Finance Minister how many SCs and STs were there in the ministry?”
