The first trailer for The Rivals of Amaziah King stars Matthew McConaughey as a honey producer and bluegrass musician who faces off against rivals after reuniting with his estranged foster daughter.

The first trailer for actor Matthew McConaughey’s upcoming crime-drama, King Amaziah’s rivalhas been released. The film, directed by Andrew Patterson, stars McConaughey as Amaziah King, a businessman and musician whose business and family are in danger.

The trailer introduces Amaziah (McConaughey) as a bluegrass musician who lives in rural Oklahoma and runs a honey-making business. As he reunites with his estranged foster daughter, he faces new enemies in the city.

The film marks McConaughey’s return to acting after a six-year hiatus. Along with McConaughey, the cast includes Angelina Lookingglass, Kurt Russell, Scott Shepherd, Cole Sprouse, Tony Revolori and Rob Morgan. They play friends, rivals and competitors involved in the conflict surrounding Amaziya’s booming honey business.

The film’s official synopsis reads: “Set in the deep woods of rural Oklahoma, the film follows the charismatic and musically talented Amaziah King (McConaughey), who cobbles together a bluegrass-playing band of misfits while overseeing the major honey-making operation in town. When Amaziah’s estranged foster daughter (Angelina Lookingglass) returns unexpectedly, she renews the connection. Leaps at the prospect of building a family business. But the honey game is cruel, and Amazia’s rivals threaten to destroy everything he’s built.”

King Amaziah’s rival Written and directed by Patterson, whose first film, vast part of the nightreceived three nominations at the 2021 Critics’ Choice Super Awards.

The crime-drama will release in theaters in limited capacity on August 14, 2026. Black Bear Pictures will distribute the film in wide release on August 21, 2026.

McConaughey is best known for the film, Dallas Buyers Club. He won the Best Actor Award at the 86th Academy Awards for his role in the film.

The actor also made a voice cameo in the 2024 Marvel superhero film, deadpool and wolverine.
