Alappuzha Gymkhana Review: Naslean’s sports comedy is a funny story of underardogs that miss some punches

Alappuzha Gymkhana hit Nasleen in theaters on April 10, 2025, starring Nasleen. 2 months after its dramatic release, the film is available for streaming on Soniliv.

If you are interested in watching the film on OTT, here you need to check the Pinkvilla review.

Plot

Alappuzha Gymkhana has the story of Jojo Johnson and his gang, who have just completed the 12th standard board examination. After knowing that most of them have failed the exam, the gang decides to secure college entry through sports quota.

In the hope of that, amateur youth decide to enter the world of boxing, considering it the easiest path. How the gang manages to secure a coach and makes the rest of the film.

Good

Alappuzha Gymkhana is not your specific sports comedy film set in the boxing world. While it is not so much about the game, the youth, the cinematic enterprise looks like an upcoming age comedy drama.

The film is holding a strong ground with actors like Naslen, Ganpati, Lukman Avaran, Anaga Maya Ravi, and Sandeep Pradeep. These actors have natural attraction and the ability to surrender to the characters is strongly clear.

Like other Khalid Rahman films, Alappuzha Gymkhana does not trust the story a lot, but is a statement. While it seems from the beginning that this will be your specific underdog story, the sports comedy does not tell the story of the heroes to grow for glory, but tells the free youth about finding their way more.

The characters of the film are not the people who develop a passion for boxing, but those who encounter incidentally. Even more importantly, this film is not about who wins or loses, nor is it about the same character, which makes it stand out of others in the same style.

From a technical point of view, Alappuzha Gymkhana provides visuals enriched by Jimshi Khalid and spectacular dialogues by Rathhesh Ravi. Additionally, music compositions of Vishnu Vijay are a great aspect.

bad

Alappuzha gymkhana can be strong for its story, but it offers much less than a story angle. The film begins relying on the characters, the relationship they shared by them, and strong feelings that hold them together.

However, in the second half, Alappuzha Gymkhana stumbles with its tone shift. With the bets, the sports film replaces the tone towards the final match.

Although all this was expected, the film does not have the same balance as once in the first half. The character falls down like the house of the arc card, with only more focus on the main lead, on the contrary how it was till that moment.

Despite having a runtime of 2 hours and 30 minutes, it seems untrue that such aspects were not properly revealed.

Display

Alappuzha Gymkhana consists of Premlu Fame Naslen, Ganpati S Poduval, Lukman Avaran, Anaga Maya Ravi, Sandeep Pradeep and many more in many other lead roles.

While Nesthan does what he does best and does not give a new shed in his acting, he should appreciate his crazy body change. However, it was Ganapati, Anaga Maya Ravi, and Lukman who made a lot of attention to the audience.
