Telugu film Akhand 2 made Rs. Earning around Rs 33 crore on the first day in India. This includes Rs. Earned 9 crores from Thursday night preview. The film grossed US$850K (Rs 7.50 crore) internationally, taking it to Rs. Earning 40 crores on worldwide opening day. The film was originally scheduled to release last week, but had to be postponed by a week due to legal issues. It is possible that some work may have been lost due to the postponement, although not much.
At its face value, these are good numbers for the cast involved, with lead Nandamuri Balakrishna ranking highest. They are better than his previous film Daku Maharaj, which collected Rs. Earned 26 crores on its opening day earlier this year. However, it is not a standalone film but a sequel to a highly commendable film. Accordingly, the costs involved are also higher than regular NBK film. So, given the brand value of the original film, expectations were quite high, and the film didn’t really live up to them.
Akhand 2 performed well in the Telugu states. Nizam created a record for NBK Film by surpassing Veera Simha Reddy on the first day. Andhra Pradesh could have done better, especially seeded districts, where not only was the original a big blockbuster, but NBK films generally performed strongly. Elsewhere, Karnataka did well, but surprisingly, Tamil Nadu posted quite good figures, nearing the crore mark. There was a Hindi dubbed version, but it was a non-starter, with hardly any collections.
Looking ahead, the immediate task for the film will be to hold well today and then earn well over the weekend. However, initial reactions to the film seem to be mixed, and given the front-loaded nature of this type of film, things may be tricky in that regard.
