Listen to the story

Google is currently in the middle of a historical case, where the US government has accused the company of misusing its dominance in online search. The case may potentially force the company to divide, and especially Google can sell chrome. And since it can happen, now, everyone’s eyes are on Chrome.
Openi showed interest in buying Chrome, owned by Arvind Srinivas, Perplexity says it also wants to buy Chrome if Google has to sell it. Perplexity Chief Business Officer (CBO) Dimitri Shevelanko was subponated during the ongoing Google vs us DoJ test, where he proposed to buy Google Chrome.
During the test, Shevelanko was reportedly asked if any company other than Google could operate a large -scale browser in the form of Google Chrome without compromising quality or introducing new costs. He said, “I think we can do it”.
Perplexity interest in buying chrome comes only a few days after OpenAII expresses interest in getting the browser. It came to light during the testimony of Nick Turley, the head of the product for chat.
Turley revealed that Openai had reached Google to use its search API within the chat near Google in 2023, assuming that it would help improve the user experience. Google refused, citing concerns about sharing access with the contestants. Turley also said that chatgate still depends on bing for search and is far from the creation of its search system that is capable of handling most questions.
If Google is forced to sell Chrome, it will also have to sell the open-source chromium platform with it, which is not a chrome but many other browsers like ARC. Google is clearly opposing this idea, warning that handing over chromium to a new owner can either charge them or neglect its maintenance, possibly disrupt the entire browser ecosystem.
However, the Department of Justice says that Google’s control over search and web infrastructure can shape the race in general AI. It is feared that Google’s dominance in search may give it an edge in AI, allowing its market position to strengthen. Meanwhile, Google has argued that AI space is already highly competitive, pointing to rivals such as meta and microsoft.
The trial highlighted Google’s partnership with device manufacturers. In the past, Google hit exclusive deals with companies such as Samsung and Motorola to default their search engine. However, the new deals have allegedly become less restrictive, allowing rival apps to include. Doj, however, wants to go ahead and prevent Google from paying to become a completely default search option on equipment.
So far, Chrome is not officially for sale. But as soon as the test comes out, technical companies like Perplexity and Openi are closely watching.
