Advance booking for director H Vinoth’s Jana Nayakan, starring actor-turned-Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay, has finally begun in India after a delay of seven months, and despite ticket prices rising to Rs 2,500, several shows are already sold out in a limited number of theatres. The film is considered to be the star’s last film as he is the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu and will be released in theaters on July 23.

Bookings have begun in areas including Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Delhi and Kerala, with tickets for the Tamil version usually priced between Rs 100 and Rs 800 in most places. However, Bengaluru has emerged as an outsider, while Chennai has kept prices capped as bookings are slowly opening up. The film also saw strong demand overseas, where bookings had begun even before the official announcement of its release date.

In Bengaluru, said to be the stronghold of the film’s producer K Venkat Narayan, the prices are quite high. While some shows are offering tickets in the range of Rs 500 to Rs 800, most of the shows listed so far are priced above Rs 1,000. Tickets for the 6:30 am show are already selling fast in some cinemas, with some shows already sold out.

Cinepolis: At Nexus Shantiniketan, recliner seats cost Rs 2,500, the highest ever price for a film. The premiere shows, which are priced between Rs 800 and Rs 1,000, have already been sold out in some theatres. Since advance booking has not yet started fully, the price may change further.

In Chennai, ticket prices have not been increased for the inauguration and have been capped at Rs 190, with the lowest priced ticket being Rs 54. Tamil Nadu has a history of discouraging early shows by increasing ticket prices for premiere shows due to fan deaths. Kamala Cinemas in Chennai said it sold 10,000 tickets of the film in a few minutes in its theater alone.

“Bookings are open. Over 10,000 tickets sold out within minutes for #JananaYagan at Kamla,” the theater said. Overseas, UK distributor Ahimsa Entertainment said it sold thousands of tickets within an hour of the booking announcement.

Jan Naygan Directed by Vinoth and produced by KVN Productions. The film was originally scheduled for a Pongal release in January, but was postponed due to delays in CBFC certification. It was also leaked online in HD print in April, before certification. After cuts and revisions, Jana Nayagan has been given an A certificate and cleared for release, with ticket demand now visible in both India and overseas markets.
