Actress Michelle Yeoh says not being able to have children made her feel like a ‘failure’

Acclaimed actress Michelle Yeoh shares deeply personal thoughts on her struggle with infertility, revealing the emotional impact it has had on her life and relationships.
speak out in BBC Woman’s HourThe Shang-Chi star said, “I’ve always wanted to have kids. That didn’t happen, so I went and got fertility treatments to help the process. And I think that’s the worst moment. Every month, you feel like you are such a failure.”
Yeoh described how repeated disappointments led him to question himself before eventually finding peace. “At some point, you stop blaming yourself. I say, there are some things in your body that don’t work a certain way. that’s how it is. You just have to let go and move on,” she said.
Her infertility had a profound impact on her first marriage to businessman Sir Dixon Poon, to whom she was married from 1988 to 1992. Yeoh revealed that his inability to have children was a significant reason for their separation.
Michelle said, “This was probably the main reason for the breakup of my first marriage.” In 10 years or 20 years, I still can’t give him the family he wants.”
Despite the pain of the breakup, Yeoh expressed no bitterness and remained connected to Poon’s family. She is also godmother to their first child, and stepmother to her husband’s son.
On the professional front, Michelle will next be seen in Wicked. The film, starring Ariana Grande, Cynthia Erivo and Jonathan Bailey, will be released in theaters on November 22.
