Actress Kamya Punjabi recently made a bold statement about the television industry, saying that sexual abuse does not take place in it. Her comments come amid ongoing discussions about abuse in the Malayalam entertainment industry.

In a recent interview News18Punjabi stressed that the television industry has maintained its clean image. “Television has been very clean. I don’t know what it was like earlier, but now it is very clean. There is no such filth here. People are not forced or blackmailed here. There is no casting couch here. If you are suitable for a role, you have talent, you will be selected for the show,” he said.

Punjabi further said that the television industry is the safest. The actor said, “I think television is the safest place in the entertainment industry. There is no sexual abuse here. Whatever happens, it happens with mutual consent.”

He said, “Nobody asks someone to sleep with him by promising a role.” According to him, though some actors may have inappropriate tendencies, they do not cross the line if they are clearly told not to do so. He said, “We have seen actors who go crazy for girls, but nobody pressurises anyone.”

Punjabi also addressed the wider entertainment industry, describing television as different from other fields. “I know a few people who say such things have happened to them. But then again, if a girl doesn’t want it, it won’t happen. It doesn’t happen in the television industry. I don’t know about films or OTT, but it doesn’t happen in TV,” she claimed.

His comments come in the wake of the Hema Committee report, which is currently a topic of discussion not only in the Malayalam film industry but also in several other film industries in India.
