A woman from Sangam Vihar, Delhi, performed weight loss surgery at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in the national capital last week, diagnosed with super-super-super-obesity, a rare and serious form of obesity marked by more than 60 body mass index (BMI).

The 44 -year -old female body mass index (BMI) was recorded at 80.4, with body weight with a height of 146.5 kg and 135 cm. The patient is a housewife and has been increasing weight progressively in the last 12 years.

Despite diet and exercise efforts, she was unable to lose weight for the last three years and developed difficulty and sleep disruption over time. She also became dependent on the constant positive airway pressure (CPAP) support due to her position and eventually became bedied.

On August 18, AIIMS doctors demonstrated a sleeve gastrectomy, a type of bariatric surgery aims to reduce abdominal size to support prolonged weight loss.

After his condition deteriorated, he was admitted to AIMS in mid -July. It was placed in the ICU with symptoms including respiratory crisis, kidney dysfunction and poor urine production. A multi -woller team managed its stabilization.

Further investigation revealed several complications, including the pulmonary artery hypertension, correct heart failure and chronic liver disease with ascites. However, doctors proceeded with a surgical plan after one month medical stabilization despite their condition.

Poor compliance for 15 cm fat thickness and laparoscopic processes in the abdomen was shown. She is currently undergoing rehabilitation and preparing to discharge.

Surgery was led by Dr. Manjnath Maruti Pol, Additional Professor, Surgical Display Department. The Anesthesia team was led by Dr. Sushmita did and manage ICU Care Prof. Anjoli and Dr. Sugna did it. Help was also provided by experts of pulmonary therapy, cardiology, endocrinology, dietics and internal medicine.

Before arriving at AIIMS, the patient was evaluated at Safdarjung Hospital and RML Hospital, where he was detected severe obstructive sleep apnea and type -2 respiratory failure. A sleep study confirmed the requirement of CPAP support.

Super-Super-Super Obesity, defined as BMI above 60, presents complex health challenges that require coordinated, multi-layered care.
