In short

  • We have a new Y2K trend that has people’s attention called the Mismatched Trend
  • This trend involves deliberately combining contrasting elements
  • From Isha Ambani to Taylor Swift and Gigi Hadid, everyone is crazy about this trend

When Kareena Kapoor Khan, also known as ‘Poo’ from ‘Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham’, walked down the stairs wearing red pants and a red sequin crop top for her prom night, she looked absolutely gorgeous.

Not only did the red co-ord set become an iconic moment, but Poo also became one of the pioneers of the ‘mismatch trend’, thanks to her sandals.

“My earliest memory of the mismatch trend is probably Kareena Kapoor and some of her iconic outfits designed by Manish Malhotra during ‘Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham’,” says Divyak D’Souza, a Mumbai-based stylist, costume designer and creative director.

Just like Divyanka, Kareena’s mismatched sandals were a fashion moment for many of us fashion lovers, and like the cycle of any trend, it seems it has come back.

But what is the mismatch trend?

Fashion lover and influencer Sakshi Jain explains india today She said she’s even seeing some of her favorite Y2K trends come back.

“this style [mismatched trend]”This deliberate act of pairing items that don’t traditionally go together is creating a stir both on and off the fashion runway,” she says.

She adds, “The spirit of the mismatch trend lies in mixing contrasting elements, be they colours, patterns or accessories.”

In simple terms, the “mismatch trend” refers to a fashion style in which outfits are deliberately made from fabrics that do not conventionally match in color, pattern or style.

‘It’s all about breaking the rules’

  • This mismatched trend aims to create a unique, eclectic look that challenges conventional fashion norms.
  • Traditional fashion norms teach us to prefer symmetry and pairing similar items, a concept ingrained in us from childhood – matching ribbons in our braids, matching shoes and matching socks.
  • However, the mismatched trend refers to wearing clothes that deviate from the expected dressing style.

Divyak agrees.

According to him, the mismatched trend is a form of rule-breaking within fashion and style.

Divyak says, “People think fashion or style rules are very rigid and have a very narrow view of what is right and wrong. So I think the mismatch trend is all about breaking rules and a sense of rebellion.”

Isha Ambani: The latest celebrity to adopt this trend

Ambani’s wedding has been in the headlines for the last several months.

It wasn’t just the bride and groom’s attire that caught every fashion lover’s attention; Anant Ambani’s sister and Mukesh Ambani’s daughter Isha Ambani’s attire also made headlines at every wedding function.

  • At the reception, Isha followed the mismatched trend with her accessories.
  • She opted for a white silk brocade lehenga designed by Manish Malhotra that was embroidered with the ancient art form, genuine silver zardozi.
  • Her outfit was completed by a woven brocade blouse and pure white silk dupatta.
  • However, the highlight of her look was her Navaratna necklace, which was created by jeweller Viren Bhagat.
  • This necklace is studded with nine gemstones, each symbolizing one of the nine planets according to Vedic astrology.
  • It took her three years to collect all the gems for her necklace. Isha also wore mismatched emerald earrings, which were in two different colours – green and white.

Taylor, who loves to set and follow fashion trends, was seen embracing the mismatched trend in her two outfits.

The most iconic is the black overalls. His black sequined asymmetric overalls were based on the theme of his album ‘Reputation’.

For her second look inspired by the mismatched trend, Taylor opted for a co-ord set in purple and orange hues and two different mismatched boots by Roberto Cavalli.

How to correct the mismatch trend?

If Hrithik Roshan aka Rohan Poo can be laughed at for wearing two mismatched sandals, so can others if you fail to get the trend right. But remember, according to experts, there is nothing like balancing a look.

For Sakshi, this means experimenting with contrasting colours and patterns.

“Combining stripes with florals or different textures can create a striking outfit. Also, try wearing different styles or shapes of earrings. You can also play with footwear by choosing shoes in different colours or designs,” says Sakshi.

Divyak agrees with this. He says that the mismatch trend can be applied not only to clothes and jewellery, but it can also be applied to footwear or nail art and manicure.

“People are doing their manicure in a way that one finger doesn’t match the other four fingers, and that creates a little bit of interesting texture and interesting detail as well,” says Divyak.

last sign

Divyak says that anyone who wants to try out the mismatched trend and is a little hesitant to take the big step should start small.

  • Start with small accessories like earrings to experiment with the mismatched trend
  • Consider starting with a manicure or nail art
  • Sync and match four fingers
  • Make one finger slightly detached and rebellious

The next step is to mix and match.

  • Divyak says mix and match prints that don’t usually go together.
  • Combine contrasting textures, like a feminine lace dress with biker boots and a sturdy leather jacket.

“The key to acing this trend is confidence. Wear your mismatched clothes with pride,” says Sakshi.
