Chuck Russell dies at 74; Jim Carrey pays tribute to The Mask director
Actor Jim Carrey remembered director Chuck Russell after his death and called their collaboration on The Mask a privilege. He said Russell’s warmth and playfulness shaped one of the jewels of his creative life.

Carey, in an interview with people magazinesaid that working with Russell was a “privilege” and recalled the atmosphere the director created on set. He said Russell’s warmth, playfulness, and creative vision left a lasting impression on the film’s cast and crew.
“I consider it a privilege to work with Chuck Russell, who during the shooting maskcreated a warm, child-like atmosphere of wonder and camaraderie on his set,” said the 64-year-old actor.
The actor said, “The entire cast and crew were impressed and inspired by his playfulness.”
Kerry also reflected on the lasting impact of the collaboration. “Each of us has been blessed with that euphoric and timeless moment for many years. I believe mask One of the jewels of my creative life. Thanks, Chuck,” he concluded.
In the 1994 film, Carrey played reserved bank teller Stanley Ipkiss, who discovers a mask that transforms him into a strange green creature capable of transforming objects into cartoon forms at will. The film marked a significant milestone in the career of Cameron Diaz, who made her screen debut playing singer Tina Carlyle, Carey’s on-screen girlfriend.
According to Russell’s family, he died on Wednesday, July 22, at his home in the San Diego area. The local fire department was called to their residence Wednesday afternoon following a report of an unconscious male, and the cause of death is unknown at this time.
