At least nine people, including two young children, were shot and injured at a water park near Detroit, the largest city in Michigan, United States. The incident happened on Saturday evening.

The suspect in the shooting later died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound at a nearby home, according to the Associated Press.

According to the AP report, police surrounded the house and tried to contact the suspect inside, but to no avail. They sent a drone into the house and then went inside and saw that the suspect was dead.

Meanwhile, news agency Reuters reported that the gun used by the suspect has been recovered from the scene.

Another weapon was found inside the home.

Although officials did not name the accused, he was reported to be a 42-year-old white man who lived with his mother. The accused’s mother has been informed.

Authorities initially said they believed 10 people were injured in the Rochester Hills shooting, but that number was revised after reports from area hospitals.

Addressing a press conference, Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard said that at around 5 pm (2100 GMT) a man exited a vehicle in front of the Brooklands Plaza splash pad park in Rochester Hills, Michigan and fired about 30 shots from a 9mm semi-automatic Glock.

The officer said he fired multiple rounds.

He said an eight-year-old boy was shot in the head and was in a serious condition. The boy’s mother was also in a serious condition with injuries to her stomach and leg, while his four-year-old brother was in a stable condition with injuries to his leg.

The sheriff said at least one witness said the shooter used two handguns during the attack, but that has not yet been confirmed.

“In the chaos, people were falling, getting hurt and trying to run away,” Bouchard said.

“Unfortunately, all of us in our law enforcement profession have seen too many horrible things.”

“The man with the gun was in no hurry. He calmly walked back to his car,” the sheriff said.

Police cordoned off the area with tape and laid dozens of yellow evidence markers on the ground among the colorful chairs.

Rochester Hills is about 30 miles (50 km) north of Detroit. The neighboring community, Oxford Township, also in Oakland County, was the scene of a mass school shooting in 2021, where student Ethan Crumbley, who was 15 years old at the time, killed four students and wounded six other students and a teacher at Oxford High School.
