Here are 7 kitchen essentials you should replace from time to time

1. Spices and herbs

Spices and herbs, the soul and heart of Indian kitchens, must be discarded after a certain period of time. When you open a packet of your favourite spices, they start losing their potency, which means your food won’t taste as good as you think. Ground spices should be replaced every 6-12 months, while whole spices should be kept for up to two years. To maintain their freshness, store them in airtight containers away from direct heat and sunlight. Label the jars of spices to indicate when to throw them away.

2. Kitchen towels

Kitchen towels, which come in handy during unwanted kitchen spills, may seem like they can withstand the ravages of time, but that’s not the case. Over time, kitchen towels become a breeding ground for bacteria and germs that can transfer to your hands. To keep your kitchen clean and hygienic, change your kitchen towels every day or at least every week, depending on your usage. Or, you can wash your dirty kitchen towels in hot water daily to keep germs away.

3. Non-stick pan

Non-stick pans are a boon for quick cooking and easy clean-up, but sadly, they don’t last forever. When you use non-stick pans regularly, their coating can wear off, leading to uneven cooking and even health hazards when eating from them. Generally, non-stick pans should be replaced every 2-3 years or as soon as the coating starts to wear off.

4. Wooden Cutting Boards

Wooden cutting boards are loved for their durability and naturally antibacterial properties. However, over time, they can develop cracks and nooks that can harbor bacteria. This can pose a potential health risk, especially if you use a wooden cutting board regularly. It’s a good idea to replace your wooden cutting board every few years or when you notice some wear and tear. If you want to increase its shelf life, avoid soaking it in water and apply oil to your wooden cutting board regularly.

5. Plastic Storage Containers

We all love to reuse our plastic food containers for years. But reusing any plastic container for too long, especially those that are meant to be thrown away, can be dangerous. Over time, the plastic breaks down and chemicals leach into your food. If you notice cracks, discoloration, or a bad smell in your plastic food containers, throw them away.

6. Kitchen Sponge

Kitchen sponges are often the unsung heroes of your kitchen cleaning, but just like towels, they can become a breeding ground for bacteria. Sponges can harbor millions of germs, especially if they are used to clean greasy dishes or countertops. To keep your kitchen and food clean, replace your kitchen sponges every 1-2 weeks or when they start to smell or become worn out.

7. Silicone Spatulas

Spatulas are used for a variety of kitchen tasks, especially when you’re trying to scrape up every last bit of cake batter. But, they don’t last forever. With repeated use, silicone spatulas can become brittle and crack, causing them to lose their flexibility. This makes them less effective. Instead, consider replacing your silicone spatulas every two years, or when you notice cracks and brittle edges.
