The 78th Annual Tony Awards performed the best of Broadway’s 2024–2025 season, with dazzling performance, emotional speech and star-staded shows. Hosted by wicked star Synthia Erivo, the Radio City Music Hall had standout moments from New Musicals like Death and perhaps happy ending, as well as powerful revival like gypsy and sunset bullet.
But everything did not happen smoothly. From technical disturbances to the off-key segment, a few moments incited the audience. Here is a look at the five worst moments of the biggest night of Broadway.
1. Sound trouble interruptions at night
There was some technical hiccups at the 78th Tony Awards, especially when it came for sound. Several presenter, including Keenu Reeves and Charlie D’Amailo, faced microphone problems during their segments. Broadcasting audio levels were inconsistent, many viewers notices less or poorly mixed sound during music performance.
The issue was particularly clear during the performance number, Jonathan Groff’s performance from Solo and Nicole Sherzinger’s Sunset Bulleward. Sound issues were otherwise distracted by strong moments and some demonstrations became flat.
2. Darren Chris tea promo flat collapses
Darren Chris, known for his broadway and TV performance, tried to bring some energy to the backstage advertising location. While changing the costumes, Chris promoted pure leaf tea in a small segment during the show.
However, well, felt out of moment. Many viewers found the promo strange. Instead of combining the show, it disrupted the flow. Celebrity advertising spots are not new, but it did not land with the audience.
3. Synthia Erivo’s cut-off song felt closed
Hosts Synthia Erivo had a difficult task of pushing the show, but her method raised some eyebrows to cut long speeches. Instead of using background music, the show made a pre-riddled clip of Erivo to Frank Sinatra’s Mai Way’s song when the winners talked very long when the winners spoke very long.
The moment looked strange instead of strange. Although it is common to gradually play the winners, many realized that the approach was ‘Cringe-Catalys’ and could be handled with a soft instrument.
4. Sarah Paulson’s dress causes a mike mess
During her present moment, Sara Paulson’s dress brushed the microphone, causing a small sound obstruction. He handled it with humor, said, “That’s fine, that’s fine. It’s a man eating dress.”
His co-producer Jean Smart replied, “You stole my joke,” to which Paulson replied, “I stole your joke.” Lightly moments were fun, but still the night was added to the list of plagued audio issues.
5. Sunset Boleward team gave low-energy speeches
When the Sunset Bulleward won the best revival of a music, director Jamie Lloyd and composer Andrew Lloyd Weber gave low-key acceptance speeches. His quiet tone felt flat compared to the high-energy environment of the evening.
This could be his British style, but the audience expected more than one enthusiasm from the biggest win of the night. The speech does not match the stress and enthusiasm around the best actress category, where there was a strong appearance of the sunset bullet.
