4 killed in Russia’s biggest attack by Ukraine in more than a year

Ukraine launched one of its largest drone strikes of the war overnight, targeting several Russian regions including Moscow in a widespread airstrike that Russian officials said involved more than 500 drones. The attack, described by officials as the largest attack on the Russian capital region in more than a year, killed at least four people and injured several others, while residential buildings and infrastructure were damaged in various areas.Russia’s Defense Ministry said its air defense systems intercepted and destroyed 556 Ukrainian drones in more than a dozen areas during the overnight bombardment, as explosions and emergency response were reported around Moscow and western Russia.According to regional officials, at least four people were killed in the attacks. Three deaths were reported in the Moscow region and one in the Belgorod region near the Ukrainian border.Moscow regional governor Andrey Vorobyov said at least three people were killed in the attacks. According to Vorobyov, a drone strike on a private residential home killed one woman, while another man remained trapped under debris for hours during rescue efforts. Two people were also reported killed in separate incidents related to the attacks.“A woman died after the UAV collided with a private house. Another person is trapped under the debris,” Vorobyov wrote on Telegram. He said the attacks began in the early hours of the morning and Russian air defense units were forced to conduct sustained operations.“Since 3 a.m., air defense forces have been repelling large-scale UAV attacks on the capital area,” he said, adding that at least four people were injured and several infrastructure facilities were targeted during the barrage.Within Moscow itself, Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said air defense systems intercepted at least 74 drones heading toward the capital overnight, making it one of the heaviest nights of drone attack the city has faced during the conflict. While Moscow and surrounding areas have been targeted by Ukrainian drones before, attacks directly affecting the Russian capital have been comparatively rare.Sobyanin said 12 people were injured in the wider Moscow region as debris from the intercepted drone fell in various areas.“Minor damage has been recorded at locations where debris fell,” the mayor posted on Telegram, urging residents to follow emergency instructions.Russian officials did not immediately disclose the full extent of infrastructure damage, but officials indicated that residential areas and strategic facilities were among the targets targeted. The latest attacks come just days after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky vowed to step up retaliation following a major Russian attack on Kiev that killed 24 people. Zelensky warned that Moscow would face “consequences” for continued attacks on Ukrainian cities and civilians.Moscow and Kiev have launched intense airstrikes in recent days after a prisoner exchange was completed and a temporary three-day ceasefire that expired earlier this week broke down.Ukraine has repeatedly defended its drone campaigns inside Russia, saying they are aimed at targeting military infrastructure, logistics centers and energy facilities supporting Moscow’s war efforts. However, Russia has accused Kiev of deliberately targeting civilian areas and attempting to spread panic through attacks on populated areas. The conflict has increasingly escalated into a war of long-range missile and drone strikes, with both countries using unmanned systems on an unprecedented scale. Analysts say the increasing sophistication and volume of drone strikes has forced both sides to invest heavily in layered air defense systems and electronic warfare capabilities.
