US President Donald Trump said on Saturday (local time) that several arrests had been made in the alleged vandalism of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. He alleged that vandals seriously damaged the recently renovated pool, claiming that a 250-foot-long hole was dug in its newly installed lining and that corrosive chemicals were poured into the water. “Several additional people have been arrested connected to the shameful vandalism of our beautiful Reflecting Pool. It hasn’t looked or worked like this since 1922, when it was originally built, but even then, it leaked badly, and was not working. Ours worked perfectly, including the mirror-like finish that perfectly reflected the two great monuments, which it never had before!” he said in a post on Truth Social.Describing the incident he said, “He took some form of knife or blade and made a 250-foot long wound in that beautiful building, which took a lot of hard work, ability and money to build and complete. They also added corrosive and destructive chemicals to the pool. The Reflecting Pool has never been as beautiful as it was just a week ago, even when it opened in 1922. Trump had criticized the previous administration for allowing the Reflecting Pool to turn algae-covered green and said he would refurbish it with an “American flag blue” lining to improve its appearance and enhance the reflections of the Washington Monument. However, shortly after the unveiling of the renovated pool, the water turned green again due to algae growth. While workers used chemical treatments to address the problem, the newly painted blue layer on the bottom of the pool reportedly began peeling. Olympic cyclist David Hearn was arrested by U.S. Park Police on Friday on a misdemeanor charge of destroying government property following an incident at the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, according to The Washington Post. Hearn reportedly stopped at the monument after completing a 52-mile bicycle ride around Hayes Point and noticed that a portion of the pool’s recently installed “American Flag Blue” liner had come loose from underneath.Hearn told officers he reached into the water to investigate the separated material. He was taken into custody shortly afterward as he prepared to leave the area and was scheduled to appear in D.C. Superior Court on July 9, the Washington Post reports. The arrest comes days after Trump alleged that vandals had damaged parts of the recently renovated Reflecting Pool and surrounding areas.
