22-year-old student shot dead while chasing phone robbers in Philadelphia; ‘I’m surprised he went after them,’ says father

A 22-year-old Penn State student was shot and killed in Philadelphia as he tried to stop robbers who stole his mobile phone, leaving family, friends and neighbors devastated by a senseless act of violence.Billy Schmidt was murdered early Saturday morning just steps from his family home in South Philadelphia. Surveillance footage reviewed by investigators showed that Schmidt encountered the suspects around 1:30 a.m. and that shots were heard shortly afterward.According to the New York Post report, Schmidt was heard saying, “Give me my phone back” shortly before he was shot.Emergency responders transported him to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, but he later died from his injuries.The murder has shocked residents of the neighborhood, many of whom are struggling to understand how a dispute over the phone could end in tragedy.“On the phone. It’s disgusting,” local resident Ezra Rowlinwaz told NBC 10. “It’s unbelievable that someone would murder someone over the phone.”Schmidt’s father, Bill Schmidt, said his son was returning home after watching the NBA Finals with friends when the robbery occurred. The stolen phone was later found thrown under a nearby car.The grieving father told ABC 7, “He was a really good person who cared about everybody and he never hurt or troubled anyone, never harassed anyone and for him to be shot like this is a travesty.”Bill Schmidt said he was surprised his son decided to pursue the suspects after the robbery.“I’m surprised she followed them after they stole her phone,” the heartbroken father said. “It’s believed that when he got to the corner the other one came out and shot him.”Police have not announced any arrests in the case and the investigation is ongoing.Family members and neighbors remembered Schmidt as a kind and hard-working young man who had a bright future. He was studying digital journalism and media through Penn State World Campus and was scheduled to graduate in December.In a statement, Penn State expressed its condolences following the student’s death.The university said, “We are saddened to learn of the tragic death of William Schmidt this morning, and we extend our deepest condolences to his family and friends. William was a fourth-semester sophomore from Philadelphia studying digital journalism and media at Penn State World Campus.”
