At least 10 people were killed and nearly 100 injured when a Russian ballistic missile struck a defense industry event in Ukraine’s Kiev region on Friday, prompting President Volodymyr Zelensky to criticize the decision to hold such a gathering during the war.Ukraine’s emergency services said rescue operations at the scene north of the capital had been completed. Images released by the agency showed emergency workers searching piles of debris near several residential homes.Addressing the nation, Zelensky blamed Russia for the attack, but also questioned the decision to hold a defense-related exhibition while the war was ongoing.“Of course, the reason for this attack is Russian missiles, nothing but Russian terrorism,” he said, according to news agency Reuters.“However, we have said thousands of times that in these wartime conditions, with such an enemy, it is absolutely unacceptable to hold an exhibition of any weapons, with large crowds of people, especially near residential buildings.”The event, organized by the Association of Drone Manufacturers, was being held a short distance from the outskirts of Kiev. A spokesman for Ukraine’s General Staff said the venue did not fall under the military’s jurisdiction, but stressed that any such event should have been held with “maximum security measures”.Kyiv regional acting governor Ruslan Oleinik announced that the Saturday following the strike would be observed as a day of mourning.The Ukrainian Defense Industry Council confirmed that representatives of the country’s defense sector were present at the time of the missile attack, but said they had not organized the event.Valery Borovik, founder of Ukrainian drone company First Contact, told local media that the missile struck a training ground where the exhibition was being held.Ukraine’s Prosecutor General Ruslan Kravchenko said a criminal investigation had been launched to investigate whether officials failed in their duties during the organization and conduct of the event.Russia also carried out attacks in several other parts of Ukraine on Friday. A Russian aerial bomb killed five people and injured nine in the eastern city of Sloviansk, according to regional governor Vadim Fylashkin. He later said that another attack on the city in the evening left more than 16 people injured and residential buildings damaged.A Russian drone strike killed two people in the northern Sumy region, regional governor Oleh Hryhorov said.Meanwhile, in the south-eastern city of Zaporizhia, a Russian attack set a shopping center on fire and injured several people.Russia and Ukraine have repeatedly accused each other of targeting civilians since Moscow launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, although both sides deny deliberately attacking civilian populations.
