Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed on Wednesday that G7 leaders have agreed to provide additional air-defense support, strengthen Ukraine’s energy resilience and impose new sanctions on Russia as Kiev seeks to bolster its defenses against Moscow’s aggression.Speaking after the G7 summit in Evian-les-Bains, France, Zelensky welcomed the commitments and called the gathering an important step toward securing continued international support for Ukraine.“The G7 summit in France yielded important results for Ukraine. Most importantly, we agreed to additional strengthen Ukraine’s air defense,” Zelensky said on X.“Our partners will ensure support for our defense and energy resilience,” he said. He said that new sanctions will also be imposed on Russia.The commitments were outlined in a joint G7 statement issued overnight, in which leaders pledged to increase supplies of air-defense systems, interceptors and long-range military capabilities to Ukraine. “We commend Ukraine for its resilience and progress on the battlefield in recent months and emphasize that there is now a new momentum,” the statement said.G7 leaders also said they would consider granting Ukraine a license to help manufacture Western arms domestically, with the aim of expanding the country’s defense production capacity.French President Emmanuel Macron said the summit generated “unprecedented convergence” among G7 leaders on support for Ukraine, including US President Donald Trump.Meanwhile, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said the result showed the G7’s support for Ukraine was “as strong as ever” and sent a clear signal to Moscow.Ukraine is heavily dependent on Western military aid as it faces Russian missile and drone attacks and a shortage of air-defense ammunition. Kiev has repeatedly asked for additional Patriot missile interceptors and other systems to counter Russian attacks.Zelensky is expected to attend an EU summit in Brussels on Thursday, days after Ukraine formally began talks to join the bloc.
