The Bombay High Court has directed the Bandra Magistrate Court to speed up the divorce case of Indian cricketers Yuzvendra Chahal and Dhanashree Verma. The latest report states that the family court has been asked to decide the divorce petition of the Astraged doubles by 20 March 2025.
A recent report by NDTV Sports has revealed that the Hon’ble Bombay High Court has allowed forgiveness after 6 months of cooling period and to decide the petition of divorce by tomorrow, ie on March 20, 2025. This decision has been considered due to the participation of Yuzvendra Chahal in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season.
According to the bar and bench, the couple, who got married in December 2020, are living separately from June 2022. It was early this year in February that he decided to file a divorce petition before the Bandra family court. The couple is also said to have filed an application to forgive the cooling period.
For unaffected, according to Section 13B (2), a mutual petition for divorce can be considered only 6 months after the date of its filing. However, Yuzvendra Chahal and Dhanashree Verma were living separately for more than 2 years, thus Bombay HC did not feel that cooling-off clauses could be implemented in this case.
Arguments were filed under Section 13B of the Hindu Marriage Act, suggesting divorce by mutual consent. Meanwhile, partial compliance with relation to a consent period made the case of divorce of Astraged couple complicated.
On 20 February, the court refused to waive the 6 -month statutory cooling period as the Indian cricketer agreed to give permanent alimony to his wife of Rs 4 crore Rs 75 lakh, according to the consent period. However, Chahal paid only 2 crore 37 lakh and 55 thousand rupees till date.
Payment of the remaining amount was seen by the Family Court as a case of non-compliance-which came into notice after investigating the report of the family counselor. Therefore, the cooling-off petition was rejected.
On Wednesday, the Bombay High Court said that the couple had already separated two and a half years and specifically agreed to the terms of consent regarding payment of alimony. HC further stated that the second installment of permanent alimony will be paid only after the divorce decree.
