YRF released a statement after the Gujarat High Court lifted the stay on the film’s release. Junaid Khan’s debut film is currently streaming on Netflix. The court ruled that the film, based on events related to the 1862 Maharaja defamation case, was not intended to hurt the sentiments of any community.

In the YRF statement, the makers expressed gratitude and wrote how the film celebrates Karsandas Mulji, one of the most important social reformers of our country.

“We are grateful to the judiciary for allowing the release of Maharaj. The film celebrates Karsandas Mulji, one of our country’s most important social reformers. Karsandas, a hero and a devoted Vaishnav, stood up for righteousness, protected women and safeguarded his community and faith. Maharaj is a tribute to his indomitable fighting spirit and his courage to be on the right side of history,” the statement said.

He further added that YRF has a 50-year-old legacy and they have never made content that has tarnished the country’s reputation. “Yash Raj Films has a 50-year-old legacy of promoting India, its stories, its people, culture and heritage. We have never made a film that has tarnished the reputation of our country or our countrymen. Hope you watch Maharaj and join us in saluting Karsandas. Thank you,” he said in the statement.

Justice Sangita K. Vishen, who had earlier stayed the release of the film on June 13, after watching the movie, allowed Netflix to stream it. ‘Maharaj’ stars Aamir Khan’s son Junaid along with Jaideep Ahlawat and Sharvari Wagh in lead roles.

Originally scheduled to release on June 14, ‘Maharaj’ was put on hold after the High Court restrained Netflix from streaming it. The decision came after a group of traders petitioned the court, arguing that the film had the potential of hurting the religious sensibilities of the Vaishnav community.
