A university graduate has gone viral after revealing that she was rejected for a restaurant server job despite having a bachelor’s degree and previous restaurant experience.The 22-year-old posts on TikTok under the username @lliivvyyyyyyyy. He shared his experience in a video, which has received over 200,000 views.He said, “In case anyone out there is being denied a job, just to feel a little better, I have been denied a restaurant serving job with a bachelor’s degree and I have actually worked at two restaurants with ‘no experience.'”The woman said she is trying to advance in her chosen career but is struggling to get even an entry-level job.“I’m trying to advance in my career and placement jobs won’t hire me,” said the job seeker.His video was relevant to hundreds of people who said they were facing similar problems despite having professional qualifications.One user commented, ‘Oh you are overqualified.’ God forbid someone wants a job while studying for a master’s or taking steps to advance their career.’Many users suggested that being overqualified can actually hurt applicants’ chances of getting the job.The talks come at a time when many job seekers say they are turning to unconventional strategies to deal with the tough job market.In a separate example shared on Reddit, an applicant described using silence as a negotiation tactic after receiving a job offer that fell well short of expectations.After hearing the proposed salary the applicant did not say anything for 30 seconds.“This was probably the most uncomfortable half minute of my professional life,” wrote a Reddit user.“I was just sitting there staring at my wall and waiting.”Eventually the silence prompted the recruiter to reconsider the offer.The applicant wrote, “Ten minutes later he called me back with an additional $12,000 and a signing bonus. It was as if the money appeared out of thin air as soon as I stopped talking.”Reflecting on the experience, the user said: “It’s a game of chicken and the person who talks first usually loses.”
