Google has unveiled its latest Pixel 9 smartphone, equipped with a new AI feature that is set to revolutionise the way users manage screenshots. The Pixel Screenshots app, a cutting-edge AI-powered tool, promises to make the cluttered task of sifting through countless images a thing of the past. Powered by Google’s advanced Gemini Nano technology, the app is designed to easily organise and find screenshots, eliminating a common frustration among smartphone users.
Google’s Pixel software vice president Sarah Chen highlighted the need for such a feature. “We’ve all been in this situation,” she said. “You know you’ve saved that restaurant address or your friend’s Wi-Fi password somewhere, but scrolling through hundreds of images is a nightmare. Pixel Screenshots does the searching for you.”
The Pixel Screenshot app offers a straightforward solution. Users can ask simple questions like “What was Sam’s Wi-Fi password?” or “When will that concert go on sale?” Then the AI scans the stored screenshots, identifies relevant information, and presents it alongside the source image. This approach turns the tedious task of manual searching into a quick and efficient process, allowing users to easily retrieve important information.
A key feature of Pixel Screenshots is its focus on privacy. Unlike many cloud-based services, this app works entirely on the device, thanks to Google’s new Tensor G4 chip. This chip is specifically engineered for advanced AI processing, ensuring all data stays securely on the device. By keeping information local, Google eliminates concerns about sending sensitive data to the cloud, giving users the convenience of AI-powered search without compromising their privacy.
In addition to managing new screenshots, the app also allows users to import old images, making it possible to search screenshots accumulated over the years. AI automatically generates titles and summaries for each image, simplifying the browsing experience. This functionality is especially useful for users with extensive screenshot collections, who often struggle to find specific images.
At the moment, the Pixel Screenshots app is only available for the Pixel 9 series. However, Google has hinted that the feature could be added to older Pixel models in the future, expanding the reach of the tool even further.
